Good things to read.
Chi Running by Danny Dreyer. Literally a life-changing book for me, and one I go back to time and time again. I’ve also given this book as a gift to tons of people.
When That Rough God Goes Riding: Listening to Van Morrison by Greil Marcus. And here I thought I was the only one this intensively nerdy/obsessive about Van Morrison. Not so! Marcus may have me beat. Happily.
Good things to watch.
Northfork (2003). Quiet, inventive, underrated.
Movie Credits. The cast and crew deserve five minutes of our time once a movie ends. I admit it can get a little mind-numbing though, watching all those names scroll by. So here’s what I like to do: watch for the “Gaffer.” I have no idea what a gaffer does, but first of all, what an awesome job title. And second, they always seem to have the best names.
If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front (2011). An Academy-Award nominated documentary. When I was finished watching this movie, I realized I may not have any conviction about anything. These people, if nothing else, have conviction.
Good things to use.
Turn Signals. I feel like turn signals have somehow gone out of fashion this past year or so. No one seems to use them anymore. Is it that they can’t be bothered to flick their wrist and hit the little lever thing before they turn? Has using a turn signal suddenly become uncool? Or is it that their hands are so full of steering wheel/cell phone/venti-iced-skinny-no-whip-mocha-Frappuccino they literally can’t reach it? Either way, turn signals are helpful. Even if you’re only changing lanes on the highway. C’mon people. It’s literally right there below your hand…
Wine Key. Don’t be one of those people who use a “rabbit” or any kind of high-tech spidery looking wine opener. Learn how to use a wine key and use it with confidence. (Assuming you can find a bottle of corked wine, and not a screw cap.) Wine key = romance.
Fast Park ‘N Relax. Sounds funny but, this company has it figured out. Seriously awesome customer service. If they provide long-term parking at an airport near you, use them. Can’t recommend them highly enough.
